Intestinal fungal overgrowth, also known as intestinal candidiasis, has been shown to be present in about 26% of people with unexplained digestive symptoms despite extensive work-up. According to another study, it also co-occurs with SIBO approximately 34% of the time. SIBO treatment can actually exacerbate intestinal fungal overgrowth, worsening or not fully resolving digestive symptoms. Knowledge of how to effectively diagnose and treat fungal overgrowth is essential for any practitioner seeing patients with SIBO or other digestive complaints.

Meet Your Instructor
Dr. Altman is a Naturopathic Physician (ND), Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Gastroenterology (FABNG), Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc) and an adjunct Professor at Bastyr University.
Dr. Altman received her Bachelor’s of Science from The Evergreen State College where she studied on ethnobotany, biology, and chemistry and then went on to earn her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and her Master of Science in Acupuncture from Bastyr University in 2011. She went on to complete a 3-year residency at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Naturopathic Primary Care prior to becoming an assistant and then associate professor at Bastyr University, where she taught for 10 years. Dr. Altman has also completed both the Clinical Teaching Certificate and the Advanced Clinical Teaching Certificate from the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Dr. Altman is considered an expert in the field of mast cell activation disorders, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, intestinal fungal overgrowth and digestive health. She has written articles, given continuing medical education lectures and performed interviews in several venues on these topics. Dr. Altman also developed the Digestive Wellness Clinic shift at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health and has been integral in developing a fellowship in naturopathic gastroenterology with the Gastroenterology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (GastroANP) and has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the GastroANP for her contributions to the field of Naturopathic Gastroenterology.
Dr. Altman has also practiced and trained in a variety of integrative clinical settings including community, tribal, academic, hospital based and free clinics. She currently provides patient care at Health Moves in Woodinville, WA as well as a Federally Qualified Health Center in rural North Central Washington.
